Frequently Asked Questions
    1. What is Why Catholic?
Why Catholic? is a unique adult faith formation program that is solidly based on Scripture and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

    2. Who is this Why Catholic? program design for?
      • People that want to make a difference in the world
      • In Today’s society, with so many options open to people, It is essential that we be thoroughly knowledgeable about our Catholic faith.
      • People that hunger to know Christ, to grow spiritually and to improve their prayer life.
      • People that seek self improvement.
      • People that want to meet new friends who share common beliefs and values.
      • People who want to take pride and ownership in being catholic

    3. How much of my time is required?
There are just 2 six small community sessions in a year. Each session is only 6 small community gatherings. One Session is in the Spring and one Session is in the fall. You can attend one or both. The first session begins the week of February 26th, and is scheduled to finish just before Easter. Each session lasts approximately 90 minutes.

    4. When do we meet?
That’s up to you! Part of the registration process will include a best-fit time schedule. We’ll place you with others in a group that has a similar schedule.

    5. Where do we meet?
The Small Community groups will meet at the Group leader’s home. Perhaps those in that community will wish to take turns hosting the meetings at their own home. It is up to that group. OR you may be meeting at South High School on Wednesday nights.

    6. Is there any cost associated with Why Catholic?
There is a nominal fee of $8.50 to pay for the cost of the guide book. You will also be able to do additional reading from our Catechism and the on line Catechism.

    7. Hey, I think I still have my Baltimore Catechism up in a box up in the attic. Will that do?
No. One of the issues that Pope John Paul II tackled in the last decade of his Papacy was to have our Catechism re-written to reflect modern society. That catechism was published just over ten years ago. You may purchase a new book at any Catholic bookstore, or read it (free!) on-line in it’s entirety at Catechism of the Catholic Church.

    8. I am a senior citizen. I’d rather be in a group of my peers that have had similar life experiences. What can I do?
Grab several friends and start your own group! Otherwise, part of the registration process will include a few profile questions that will help us place you in the group you are most comfortable in. We plan on having teens, young adults, wise citizens, or a melting pot. If you want to be a part of Why Catholic? we want you to be able to enjoy the time, as well as to learn more about our rich Catholic faith.

    9. How “small” is a small community?
To maximize learning and to keep the sessions moving quickly, we suggest keeping the size at six to eight participants.

    10. I have children in the Religious Ed program. Will Why Catholic? help me help my children grow in their faith formation?
Absolutely! What better way to help your children learn than to share that learning experience with them. Ever struggle to help your eighth-grader understand algebra? Sharpening your understanding of our Catholic faith will allow you to have full and meaningful conversations with your kids as you both continue to learn.

    11. Will there be Why Catholic? sessions scheduled to compliment my children’s Religious Ed classes?
Yes, Wednesday is Why Catholic? day at Crystal Lake South! This allows you to make the most efficient use of your time. Drop your child off at Crystal Lake South and stay for Why Catholic?. What better way to have a discussion with your child than to discuss what they learned and you learned. This is a powerful bonding discussion between child and parent.

    12. Who are the small group leaders?
That person sitting next to you! Our leaders will be your fellow parishioners. You can be a group leader and we need people just like you.

    13. I’d like to be a small group leader. But I’ve never done this before. What do I do?
Attend a specially designed class for our leaders. St Elizabeth Anne Seton wants you! Your success is everyone’s success. You Can do this!

    14. I’m kind of shy, and don’t like having personal discussions with others regarding my faith. Why should I attend?
Prayerful reflection is a basic part of our faith. We all learn when we listen. Join Why Catholic? and hear Our Lord speak to you through your more chatty fellow parishioners!

    15. My Catholic faith is very personal. Why would I want to discuss it with others?
Is your reluctance a result of your private faith with Our Lord, or is it because you feel you cannot discuss the basis of our faith knowledgably with others? Join Why Catholic? and find out!
